Just when you thought you knew it all about vortices...
Where did the portal come from that delivered Alice to her wonderland in 1865? Exactly how did Dorothy get transported to Oz in 1900? Dorothy’s tornado and Alice’s doorway to Wonderland are both considered by some to be a type of magical enchanting vortice/portal/gateway capable of transporting fictional characters on a journey between realms. However, in a world of facts and proof, a vortice is defined as a swirling mass such as air, water, or fire. Examples of these Vortices could be cited as tornadoes or whirlpools. These vortices are based on fact and science. But since the 1920s, another definition of the vortices had swirled to the surface of modern consciousness although descriptions of these mysterious places go back further.
There are reportedly positive and negative vortex sites throughout the world. Disappearances, weird UFO sightings, strange feelings and more occur in these mysterious places of paranormal. According to many well-known legends and myths, there are 12 vortex sites of mysterious disappearances on the Earth. Five lies along lines of latitude north of the Equator, five south of the Equator, and one at the each of the magnetic poles. In 1972, Ivan T. Sanderson, a noted naturalist and paranormal investigator, first coined the term, “Vile Vortices” in his article “The Twelve Devil’s Graveyards Around the World” for Saga magazine. The theory attempted to explain why 12 areas of the world seemed to have higher incidents of paranormal phenomenon than others. These vortices sites are said to have many mysterious paranormal events, generally involving the unexplained lack of function of cell phones, radars, radios, & compasses, to the disappearance of ships, airplanes, and people.
Coincidently, it must be pointed out ancient texts also mention 12 areas on the earth where there are gates to the heavens and to the underworld. The Bible describes 12 gates of heaven and the Book of Enoch mentions 12 places where portals between heaven and earth are open:
“And at the ends of the earth, I saw twelve portals open to all the quarters (of the heaven), from which the winds go forth and blow over the earth.”
There is also something to be said about an interesting correlation between the 12 gates of Enoch, Sanderson’s 12 Vile Vortices, and the 12 gates of the underworld. Remarkably there is further explanation given in the ancient texts perhaps showing the people of olden times knew of these vortex/portals specifically when they talked about the openings having “evil effects” or “beneficial effects” describing these mysterious gates between dimensions. Perhaps Enoch was speaking about the effects of portal/vortexes stating:
“Thus the twelve openings of the four heavenly directions are completed; all their orders, all their evil effects, and all their beneficial effects have I revealed to you!”
There is a lot to be said about Enoch, whose flesh was turned to flame, his veins to fire, his eye-lashes to flashes of lightning, eye-balls to flaming torches, and whom the Hebrew God placed on a throne next to the throne of glory, received after this heavenly transformation the name Metatron. As Metatron, Enoch becomes the “Angel in the Whirlwind” and master over other angels. Sparks, storms, whirlwinds, and thunder encircled him which emanated from his form in a vortex-like manner. The angels were said to of dressed Enoch/Metatron in magnificent garments which included a crown. A heavenly herald proclaimed the man’s name would no longer be Enoch, but Metatron, and that all angels must obey him second only to God. Metatron is also the angel connected with Abraham and Isaac’s test on Mt. Moriah. The “Angel in the whirlwind” is a metaphor that is used in the bible to describe the “winds of Moriah,” often a wind known to bring death and destruction. The whirlwind was a vehicle of terror for the God of the winds and the angel riding upon the whirlwinds was none other than Enoch/Metatron. Metatron became the foremost intermediary between the divine and the human possessing experiences both of the Earthly and the Heavenly.
Ivan T. Sanderson it seems was avidly interested in investigating the gateway legends between heaven and earth. Truly discovering the legends of doorways between heaven, hell, and earth would cause someone to want to investigate. However, there appeared to be a downside to some of these places. Ship and plane disappearances linked to paranormal events in the late 60’s captured peoples attention and is where Sanderson focused specifically on a dozen areas that were approximately equidistant and were the subjects of reported unexplained disappearance incidents and/or electromagnetic distortions. After being pulled into the mystery Sanderson did his best to attempt to explain the vortex phenomena in scientific terms stating:
“The vortex as a structure lies at the very core of existence, as in the atom and apparently beyond down to the behavior of the quanta.”
In 1973 three Soviet scientists (Nikolai Goncharov, Vyacheslav Morochov, and Valery Makarov) extended Sanderson’s theory in an article titled “Is the Earth a Large Crystal?” The article postulated that “a matrix of cosmic energy” made up of twelve pentagonal plates covers the earth. The work of the Russian scientists outlined a planetary grid that built on Sanderson’s original twelve Vile Vortices possessing unusual properties and other mysterious phenomena. Nevertheless; the research into the phenomena brought about the realization not only do historical records verify the possibility of the existence of these gateways but it seems the strange doorways were created by advanced civilizations/God thousands of years ago. The fact there are dozens of other ancient sites around the globe displaying fascinating similarities according to the legends is pretty compelling evidence there very well could be something to the information found in the Book of Enoch about the 12 gates between heaven, earth, and the underworld. Legends states in the distant past, great heroes crossed into the land of the gods by passing through the “Gate of the Gods” where they were said to of enjoyed a prosperous and glorious immortal life. Of course, modern science believes such travel is impossible, however, legends from all around the globe speak of travel through mysterious ‘gates’ thousands of years ago.
Why is it positive and negative energy vortices are situated where they are on the earth remains a mystery. Nonetheless; strange documented events, good and bad, appear to be happening at these locations. Often there are legends surrounding odd activity at these places going back in recorded history along with UFO activity. The amount of mysterious activity reported almost makes it seem as if these doorways are being accessed by all types of paranormal manifestations who are not always benevolent.
Some claim the Earth is mapped out as an icosahedron (or dodecahedron) Grid, therefore, these areas are all equidistant geometric points (Vortices) of intersecting (Ley) lines. The phenomenon is addressed as geometric patterns by Plato, in the book Anti-gravity and the World Grid.
Sometime in 1979, those locations were nicknamed “Vortexes” and that shortened label has stuck. Normally, the plural of vortex is vortices, but people in Sedona have a different view of what a vortex is. Accordingly, they refer to them in the plural as vortexes. Although most vortex believers are genuine, a huge tourism industry has been built up around these mystical places in the Sedona area. Sedona, for the most part, has few major churches, no relics, no established holy sites except for perhaps the Chapel of the Holy Cross. But what it does have are “vortexes.” The actual number of vortexes in Sedona, which varies from guide to guide– is subject to debate. Vortexes are geographical/topographical sites which according to legend can enhance meditation, prayer, vitalization, reduce stress, heal the past, and create thinking and problem-solving.
Vortex sites are also said to be where according to legend one is able to enter into and be transported instantly to any other vortex location while in the astral body.
Linda Moulton Howe, an American investigative journalist and award-winning documentary filmmaker best known for her work as a ufologist and advocate of a variety of conspiracy theories, stated Sedona is the location of some type of portal. Howe reported sometime in 1982 a man approached her stating he was involved with construction planning stages somewhere in Sedona where the goal of the US government was to build and place a machine in order to alter the magnetic fields of the earth in the area that were said to be naturally opening and collapsing periodically on cyclic intervals. (Indeed one of the secrets of Sedona is most paranormal and UFO sightings are on specific cyclical days.) In order to control these gateways, it appears the answer was to build a large all brick building withholding a secret machine within the enclosure in order to prevent the collapse of the magnetitic fields of a specific targeted area. The US Military and the Vatican have shown an interested in controlling these gateways. Retired U.S. Army Colonel Philip J. Corso, author of The Day After Roswell reportedly showed Howe a handful of specific places in the world like Sedona that have had recorded paranormal active interactions throughout history.
The vortexes in the Sedona/Verde Valley region were first discovered locally by mystical methods in the 1950s by a New Age adherent Page Bryant through channeling and a vision. Bryant gave a clear description of the phenomena:
“A vortex is a mass of energy that moves in a rotary or whirling motion, causing a depression or vacuum at the center.... These powerful eddies of pure Earth power manifest as spiral-like coagulations of energy that are either electric, magnetic, or electromagnetic qualities of life force.”
Bryant identified four power vortexes that coincide with spectacular rock formations in and around Sedona: Bell Rock, Airport Mesa, Cathedral Rock, and Boynton Canyon. The Chapel of the Holy Cross Vortex was added later and is known for being one of the strongest and most easily felt premier vortexes in all of Sedona. Many sacred temples and churches have been built near or on powerful vortexes throughout the world. Sedona’s vortexes have become so popular that the town has become the capital center of New Age movement and spirituality. According to the local newspaper Sedona Red Rock News, “Starting in the 1960’s word spread in the United States among spiritual seekers to visit Sedona’s high energy meditation sites.” Sedona soon became world-famous for its energy vortexes and is considered one of the strongest energetic places in the world. Millions of people travel to Sedona every year to experience the energy of the healing vortices. But many nonbelievers are attracted to Sedona as well, thanks to the area’s spectacular red rock formations - four of which happen to ironically coincide with vortexes.
Some researchers contend Sedona’s spiritual heritage actually goes back for millennia. The Spring 2015 Edition of the Visitor’s Guide published by the Sedona Red Rock News, states that archeologists believe the ancient Sinagua/Anasazi people may have held Sedona as sacred ground in the same way people do today since ancient ruins ring Sedona in the Verde Valley area. It is thought these people of the distant past lived on the outskirts and traveled into the red rock area to be part of sacred ceremonies. The area has many kivas where an assortment of ceremonial rites would be performed to enter the spirit world.
Now having said that, what is a Sedona Vortex? A vortex is a place of especially high mystical power or energy, located where hypothetical alignments called “ley lines” intersect with one another. It appears Sedona’s New Age movement eventually took up the idea of ley lines, interpreting them as some kind of magnetically-charged sources of cosmic energy. Some people also associate these lines with UFO landing sites and/or the “spirit lines” of ancient flights. Of course, there are other theories circling vortexes and ley lines as well, including some who claim perhaps ley lines are what UFOs travel along in the same way people drive cars along highways. For the most part, vortexes are areas of high energy concentrations, originating from magnetic, spiritual, or sometimes unknown sources considered to be gateways or portals to other realms, both spiritual and dimensional.
Sedona has vortex centers correlating to the earth’s body grid connecting two stars. These often overlooked or not known, but equally as powerful and fully interrelated in the overall scheme of things, are referred to Personal Body Vortexes. People have gone as far as assert vortexes are analogous to the chakras in the human body acting as gateways between the higher planes of existence and the physical plane that we perceive. From these ‘gates’ energy is distributed throughout the body in a system of pathways called Nadis in Sanskrit. The Chakras fall or have been created, like Ley Lines, at the points where these lines cross and meet. There are 9 major chakras in the body, counting two above the head within the etheric field, which are not normally referred to. There are several minor chakras throughout the body. The arteries in the human body are analogous to the rivers and waterways of Planet Earth. Ley Lines are analogous to the nervous/energy system in the human body. It has been stated by several sources including channelings from Edgar Cayce, that crystals were directed during Atlantean times at balancing the ley lines of the Earth’s plane, and maintaining the stability of Earth.
The vortexes in Sedona are said to be swirling centers of subtle energy coming out from the surface of the earth. The vortex energy found in the Verde Valley is not exactly electricity or magnetism, although it does leave a slight measurable residual magnetism in the places where it is strongest. A US Geological team did a survey of the area and created a map (See image below) showing the strength of magnetic fields in the Verde Valley area. Notice the strength of the magnetic fields in the Sedona Mountains is over 500 times greater than the surrounding area.
There have been a few who have gone to great lengths to analyze US Geological Survey magnetometer readings of the red rock mountains of the region. A 2002 USGS report stated Volcanic rocks are the most prevalent magnetic lithology of this region when tectonic processes disrupt the placement and orientation of rock a magnetic anomaly results in the local magnetic field.
Though some people feel absolutely nothing at vortex locations, others, on the other hand, usually the women, report:
“Standing in one is somewhat like the sensation Marilyn Monroe might have felt with her dress swirling up.”
Most of all the vortex people experience an awakening to wonder as they stand in such beauty for in Sedona not only do they feel the wonder and indescribable beauty of their surroundings but even more significantly they are able to feel the mystery of themselves. Indeed if a person desires to experience the energy that whirls and lifts people to heavenly heights, the pathway is to go within the self. To some, the vortex is a Kundalini or electrical energy that is inside the body which travels up the spine in a serpentine vortex motion. It has also been suggested this electrical vortex energy can be portals into other realms, much like Alice’s Wonderland or Dorothy’s Oz. Then, of course, there’s the electromagnetic field factor an area which the science and metaphysical communities can and do agree. Electromagnetic fields are real. Nevertheless; vortexes will always be magical places to many, regardless of what science is able to prove or disprove. It is true vortexes may not whisk people away on the yellow brick roads to sing and dance with the lollipop guild, or to Wonderlands, but they certainly offer a chance to cross over into spiritual dimensions once the secret to exploring them becomes known since they are not generally given away.
Main Vortex Locations
The Verde Valley area has 5 major known vortex locations with smaller lesser energy centers found throughout the area. The energy from these vortexes saturates the whole area in and around Sedona, and can be noticed in a subtle but general way anywhere around town. Sedona is world-famous for its energy vortexes and is considered one of the strongest energetic places in the world. Legend says millions of people travel to Sedona every year to experience the energy of the healing found here. According to Richard Dannelley and Pete A. Sanders Jr. in their works Scientific Vortex Information and Sedona Power Spot Vortex respectively, vortexes have been labeled according to the direction of their energy flow. Up-flow, where energy is flowing upward out of the earth; and Inflow, where energy is flowing inward, toward the earth.
1: Airport Mesa Vortex
The Airport Mesa vortex is an Upflow area (also called Electric or Masculine) said to aid the spirit to soar high for a gaining perspective and/or greater oneness and serenity. The location is also the one places in Sedona where a person can get a 360 degree panorama of the whole town which makes it one of the more popular vortex sites in the area. Walk up the trail to the saddle between the hills, to find the legendary twisted Juniper trees.
2: Bell Rock Vortex
Bell Rock is one of the area’s most known vortex meditation sites. It is an Upflow area (also referred to as Electric or Masculine) Bell Rock, reputed to have strong vortex energy all around it, is on the Byway and unmistakable. It’s huge bell shape towers over Village of Oak Creek making it easy to spot. For decades seekers from around the world have used Bell Rock for contemplative reflection and inspiration. Bell Rock has lots of history, starting with the Yavapai Indians, whose ancestors are said to of roamed the area believing the red rocks were the bodies and blood of huge monsters. Legend says a Shaman hero Skatakaamcha slew the monsters, including a giant bird that lived on a mountaintop (some say Bell Rock).
3: Boynton Canyon Vortex
The Boynton Canyon vortex located is just past Enchantment Resort and is very popular with visitors to Sedona. (Combination site of Upflow/Masculine and Inflow/Feminine- also called Electromagnetic) Upflow Vortexes are said to be associated with mountains, and mesa tops. They help your spirit soar for a higher perspective and greater oneness. Inflow Vortexes are associated with valleys, canyons, and caves. They are said to help a person go inward for introspective prayer/meditation and healing hurts from your past. This vortex location is said to be a place where people go to find balance. Having a good masculine/feminine balance also helps relationships by strengthening the things that make relationships work well, such as intimacy, commitment, honesty and openness. Some say this is the most powerful vortex with energy very powerful in all three parts: the masculine side, the feminine side, and the balance.
4: Cathedral Rock / Red Rock Crossing Vortex
Oak Creek, where it runs next to Cathedral Rock, is called “Red Rock Crossing” and considered a strong Vortex as well as a sacred area in Native American history. Majestically overlooking the land and Oak Creek, Cathedral Rock is revered by Native Americans as a home of the gods. It is also the most photographed Red Rock Formation, often found on postcards and calendars. The Cathedral Rock vortex is said to be an Inflow area (also referred to as Magnetic or Feminine).
5: Chapel of the Holy Cross Vortex
Known as the premier location in the area for “Soul Travel,” The Chapel of the Holy Cross is a Roman Catholic chapel built into the mesas of Sedona, Arizona, which was inspired and commissioned by sculptor Marguerite Brunswig Staude. The chapel was completed in 1956. The American Institute of Architects gave the Chapel its Award of Honor in 1957. In the sculptor’s words, “Though Catholic in faith, as a work of art the Chapel has a universal appeal. Its doors will ever be open to one and all, regardless of creed, that God may come to life in the souls of all men and be a living reality.” In 2007, Arizonans voted the Chapel to be one of the Seven Man-Made Wonders of Arizona, and it is also the site of one of the so-called Sedona vortices. The Chapel is one of the main tourist attractions in the Sedona area.
Vortex Energy in Juniper Trees
Actual evidence for the existence of the vortexes—apart from all the footprints left by tourists—is hard to come. The twisted juniper trees, which are indeed quite unusual, are the only physical indication of invisible forces, and only a very few of the trees have this feature. You’ll see a twisted tree right next to a perfectly ordinary one. It seems strange that a vortex would produce such a highly localized effect. Juniper trees are said to respond to the vortex energy in a physical way which seems to reveal where this sacred energy is strongest. It appears the stronger the energy, the more of an axial twist the Juniper trees exhibit in their branches. Instead of going straight down the branch, the lines of growth follow a slow helical spiral along the length of the branch resembling a vortex pattern. This spiraling effect can sometimes even bend the branch itself.
What is said to happen when people visit these vortexes according to the new age community in Sedona is that one can be healed spiritually and even physically. Vortexes are areas of energy that are reported to rise up from the earth’s surface, supposedly spiritually thus physically affecting any spiritually sensitive person who travels within the vicinity. Of course, it must be duly noted the vortex phenomena isn’t experienced or understood by everyone. In 2012 Peter Gersten, a retired lawyer who lived in Sedona for some time was reportedly left perplexed after a vortex failed to open at the base of Bell Rock. Apparently, after becoming involved with the UFO phenomenon, Gersten made his decision to somehow take flight by planning to leap into a “portal” once it opened stating:
“At exactly 11:11 a cosmic portal will open in Sedona Arizona and a leap of faith - from the top of Bell Rock - will propel me through its opening.”
Gersten climbed on the top of Bell Rock awaiting manifestation of the extraordinary event which he publically wrote about stating:
“I believe that some type of cosmic portal will be opening at that time and place and that an opportunity will present itself.”
Peter Gersten came down off Bell Rock a totally new man when the mountain didn’t give up her secrets so easily.
Systems of ley lines vortexes/portals is not a new idea. Sacred temples of the ancient world around the Mediterranean are located at powerful vortexes, and drawing lines between them will bring out patterns of triangles. The Indians in the American Southwest, as well as those in Peru and other parts of South America, located their cities and the roads between them on vortexes and ley lines. Many sacred temples and churches have been built near or on powerful vortexes. Many people report feeling the local vortex energy on some level within themselves, whether it is simply on a physical level, of increased energy and aliveness, increased mental clarity or understanding of things may come to them that was not there before. Some report obtaining new directions to take in life, solutions to problems, or new creative endeavors. The energies of vortexes some say can affect people on an emotional or spiritual level of feeling the presence of God/Source or having spiritual experiences. Many people report feeling the release of old emotions and sufferings that have been carried for a long time only to replace them with new awareness and understanding of things allowing them to begin anew.
The beauty of Sedona is such that many people can only compare it to a powerful spiritual experience. People from all over the world come to the area to experience the vortexes. You could say Sedona is the “Vortex Capital” of the world since so many people visit each year. To visit Sedona you either have to recalibrate your sense of awe, or your brain interprets the experience as literally supernatural. If you’re inclined to believe in the supernatural, then it’s normal and expected for human psychology to determine that a higher power is in effect in Sedona. The concept of the “energy vortex” is, for whatever reason, the popular explanation that took the strongest hold here. The magnitude of the experience is palpable enough that many of us tend to accept the vortex explanation as plausible. The feeling is strong, thus the evidence seems to support the suggested explanation. However, one question remains to be answered. Is it possible —as legends suggest— these ancient sites were designed by intelligent forces going beyond rational understanding and that they are in fact ‘ancient portals’ leading towards distant places elsewhere? If there is an intelligent design behind vortexes, then who put them there and for what intended purpose? Or are legends that speak of such portals nothing but ancient myths? Nevertheless; vortexes or not, Sedona is a marvelous place where locals consider the ancient sites in the area to be powerful places with mystical powers.
