The Legendary Israel Regardie
Israel Regardie was an occultist, writer, and the legendary Aleister Crowley’s personal secretary, aid, and transcriptionist, widely known for his books and commentaries on the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. As an adept of the now defunct secret order of the Golden Dawn, he became famous among the occultists of his day for breaking his oath of secrecy and publishing the order’s complete rituals in his book “The Golden Dawn.” Today this book is a classic bestseller and has been revised and re-issued several times.
Beginning in 1928 he traveled through Europe as Crowley’s secretary and student. Although he later parted company with Crowley, he defended him from those who disliked his exploits in magic and sexual liberties, and spoke of his “real genius and grandeur.”
Regardie was well aware of Crowley’s more controversial exploits but was willing to overlook much that might be objectionable because of what he recognized as Crowley’s true magical genius. After reading Part I of Book 4 by the occultist Aleister Crowley, Regardie initiated a correspondence which led to his return at 21 to the U.K. at Crowley’s 1928 invitation to become his secretary. When the two parted company four years later, in 1932, Regardie distanced himself from Crowley personally, but still retained a great deal of respect for his writings. In 1931 he wrote A Garden of Pomegranates, a primer on Qabalah based on notes he had taken while working for Crowley.
Overshadowed by his association with Crowley, much of his work has been left unappreciated by those outside of the realms of high magic and occultism. Israel Regardie’s writings and the students he taught or influenced provide much of the foundation for modern Western occultism. In addition to preserving the knowledge, Regardie also preserved a valid branch of the initiatory lineage of the Golden Dawn in America the alchemical melting pot where the New Age was incubating which ironically really took off in places like Sedona, Arizona, along with the Harmonic Convergence.
Regardie later became a chiropractor and, following the outbreak of war with Japan, served in the U.S. Army. After the war, he settled in California, where he practiced chiropractic and psychoanalysis until moving to Arizona.
The Legacy of Israel Regardie
The legacy of Israel Regardie is one of magic and mystery leading to mysterious levels of Soul or Astral Travel which was ironically a working part of the magical system he wrote so much about in several books. Israel Regardie lived in Sedona and was said to visit the Chapel of the Holy Cross on a regular basis until his passing in 1985. What is fascinating is the fact Dr. Israel Regardie in 1930’s adopted and took on the name “Francis” a name given to Regardie by Winifred Burke (wife of the famous novelist Thomas Burke), who thought that his spiritual direction was reminiscent of St. Francis of Assisi for his faith, humility, and love.
The Chapel of the Holy Cross is in fact called by some the “premier” location in Sedona to Soul Travel or otherwise termed Astral Projection in an astral body. The astral body is a subtle body posited by many philosophers, intermediate between the intelligent soul and the mental body, composed of a subtle material. The concept ultimately derives from the philosophy of Plato: it is related to an astral plane, which consists of the planetary heavens of astrology. The astral plane, also called the astral world, is a plane of existence postulated by classical (particularly neo-Platonic), medieval, oriental and esoteric philosophies and mystery religions
To travel in the astral body is one of the most useful, interesting and misunderstood tools in the toolbox of the magician, mystic, and psychonaut. Many authors on the subject have discussed the theory and practice of astral projection including Dr. Regardie extensively in terms of their own system or Order, and countless others have misapplied the term in various ways.
Astral projection is, in fact, a very natural process, and many people do it involuntarily during sleep. The two primary uses of astral projection to an occult magician are pathworking and astral temple work. Pathworking is a system developed primarily by members of the original Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. The most common aspect of pathworking utilizes the 22 paths of the Qabalistic Tree of Life. (Isn’t it a little odd Dr. Regardie wrote two books called, “The Tree of Life and The Golden Dawn?”)
Is it just a coincidence, on one hand, the Sedona Chapel of the Holy Cross is on record as being one of the best places there is to astral project and on the other, we have one of the most famous experts on the subject visiting the place regularly? What is it about the Chapel of the Holy Cross that has attracted the new age movement including famous occultists like Dr. Francis Israel Regardie who is named after a Saint who has a shrine dedicated to him at the same location?
The Occult Connection
Edward Aleister Crowley, former instructor to Israel Regardie, magus, poet, yogi, great beast, call him what thou wilt was many, many things, but could he have also been an extraterrestrial contactee?
Throughout Crowley’s years as a magician performing magical experiments derived from some of the same systems as Dr. Regardie, it seems Crowley also often attempted to contact non-human intelligences including what we call today “Aliens.” Through the uttering of ‘barbarous’ names, incantations and the regurgitation of ancient inscriptions and veiled verses, Crowley called forward all manner of spirits, demons and invisible masters from which he sought counsel. One entity in particular that has drawn an intense amount of interest over the years is the character known as “LAM.” Around 1917, in New York, Crowley drew the image of this ‘praeter-human intelligence’, after performing a ritual now known as the ‘Alamantrah’ working. During this magical experiment, an entity urged Crowley to “find the egg”, and it seems, at some point, Crowley experienced contact with this large egg headed entity known as LAM, who some say looks like very much like a grey alien.
The Amalantrah Workings
Sometime in January through March of 1918, Aleister Crowley started a series of magical workings called the Amalantrah Workings. These were a performed via Sexual & Ceremonial Magick (his spelling) with the intent to invoke certain “intelligences” to appear as physical manifestations. In actuality, the operation typically manifested as a series of visions and communications received through the mediumship. Be that as it may, at least one such “intelligence” was brought into physical manifestation via the Magical Portal they created. It seems the entity that came through is the one pictured below next to a grey alien. Crowley maintained the picture is actually a portrait and drawn from real life. This entity either called itself “Lam,” or was named “Lam” by Crowley. Either way, he considered it to be of interdimensional origin, which was the term then for extraterrestrial at the time.
It is generally agreed within occult circles that Crowley intentionally opened a portal of entry via magic ritual in the Amalantrah Workings which allowed the likes of Lam and other similar entities a passageway onto the earth-world. The rift “in-between the spaces of the stars,” created by the Amalantrah Working, created a gateway through which Lam and other extra-cosmic influences could enter the known universe, and most particularly, our earth-world. According to occultists involved in such things, the Portal has since widened.
After examining the evidence presented herein it would seem likely that the reason as to why Sedona has become one of the main intergalactic doorways in the United States since 1980 is because there are people who for whatever reason are attempting to summons forth beings of unknown character.
If Dr. Regardie performed some of the same rituals as the famous Aleister Crowley had then perhaps some of the false spirituality and theological error coming from the region can be accounted for. While it’s far from an exact science, the magnetic anomalies, coupled with so much documented vortex and portal lore, leads one to suspect an open preternatural portal area. No other region in the continental United States compares when it comes to identified vortexes.
The information contained herein presupposes two very important factors: that there are “aliens”, and that some people (occultists) have “magical powers” which enable them to summons and call such forth onto this plane of existence. It is not the point here to prove whether or not there are such beings, existences, or powers. What is known is that there are people who believe that there are such beings and believe that they have such powers. The crux of the information presented is based on what people believe, which may be very different from the way things really are. Please bear this in mind.
Additionally, the information contained herein also recounts some very curious behavior on the part of a number of people. These behaviors and events actually did take place and are fact. However, the supposed results of these events are entirely subjective and entirely in the realm of belief. It is not the purpose herein to try to prove or disprove the beliefs of the people involved. It’s what they did (and do) because of these beliefs that are of interest. Nevertheless; isn’t it a little odd on one hand the Sedona Chapel of the Holy Cross is on record as being one of the top places in the area to astral project and then on the other hand we have one of the most famous experts in the field who wrote perhaps the most famous books to date on the subject ironically living in Sedona who some have related visited the place regularly?
What is it about the Chapel of the Holy Cross that has attracted the new age movement including famous people like occultists Dr. Francis Israel Regardie who is named after a Saint who has dedicated to him an “alien-looking shrine” at the same location? What about the fact the church is also owned by the Vatican who ironically looks towards the heavens with a device called L.U.C.I.F.E.R. on top of Mt. Graham a short distance away awaiting an “Alien Savior” much in the same fashion the chapel itself points a cross straight up into the sky as if it too were sending a clear message of awaiting the arrival of something, is this too just another odd coincidence?
Israel Regardie was the personal aid of the world famous even now to this day Aleister Crowley who was a practicing occult Magician. During such time Regardie would take notes and was said to of taken vows of secrecy to keep the magical working and discoveries of Aleister Crowley secret. Years later for whatever reason Regardie broke those vows and wrote a book called “The Golden Dawn.” This book on ceremonial magic specifically works on Soul Traveling or Astral Projection is considered by many to be the book that started the modern occult movement.
The original Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, which started in the late 1800s, borrowed from a wide variety of occult traditions from such sources like the Astrology, Enochian Magic, Kabalah, Tarot, Geomancy, Theosophy, Freemasonry, Paganism, and many more which ultimately created a unique and viable system of magic that is still being practiced today. Almost every contemporary occult writer has been influenced, directly or indirectly, by the Order or its members, making The Golden Dawn one of the most influential occult books of the past 100 years. Therefore it seems there is a connection and perhaps reason of the likely cause and start of the new age movement which ironically was said not hit the Verde Valley Area until right after none other than Dr. Francis Israel Regardie moved to Sedona perhaps called to the Harmonic Convergence like so many others of the time where he stayed until passing away in 1985.
