THE VERY MYSTERIOUS MONTEZUMA WELL
THE VERY MYSTERIOUS MONTEZUMA WELL
Located approximately 25 miles from Sedona Arizona, Montezuma Well, a National Monument, is truly a place like no other in the world for various reasons with lots of beauty and mystery hidden in its mysterious depths as shall be presented.
It was Capt. Warren Day of Fort Verde who has been recorded as the first person to officially explore the unusual surroundings and depths of the well built amidst the remains of a lost civilization as well as call the well “bottomless” after performing a few experiments from a raft. Looking back, one can’t but wonder why someone would go to any length at all back in the late 1800’s to verify the depths of any body of water little lone explore one possible known for being bottomless unless of course a person was perhaps following up on some of the local legends or lead about the well being the gateway to “Other Worlds.” (There are still places on earth today all over and even more back in the late 1800’s of which the depths are not known but for some reason, someone wanted to know the depths of this unique world.)
It wasn’t until sometime in 1948, just shortly after Montezuma Well became a National Monument a person actually had the interest and courage to dive into the mysterious abyss to have a look around. The report of diver H.J. Charbonneau seemed to verify a conclusion drawn by the famous newspaper reporter and adventurer, Charles Lummis, some 60 years earlier, that the well was a “creepy place.” Upon surfacing, Charbonneau reported the bottom was at 55 feet and composed of fine silt. He also noted the pond was thick with leeches from about 30 feet on down. And according to a report from the park’s custodian at the time, Charbonneau also said: “he stepped on something soft, slimy and large, which caused him concern.”
The well is a unique ecosystem with several plants and animals found nowhere else on earth. There are leeches, water scorpions, amphipods, and turtles that live in this closed off ecosystem. The remarkable habitat is perhaps due to the receiving and the discharging of large quantities of warm water entering through underground springs that keep the environment within the well remarkably stable. Due to the high concentration of carbon dioxide, 600 times higher than most natural aquatic environments. This rich supply of dissolved CO2, hence lack of oxygen, has precluded many aquatic animals from living in these waters, especially fish. Since fish cannot survive within the Well due to high levels of arsenic, a leech, called Motobdella Montezuma, has somehow evolved to become a pelagic hunter. In fact, this is the only known species of leech that is said to be an open water hunter! Motobdella Montezuma spends much of its day at the bottom of the Well, safely hidden from its predators while at the same time, its primary prey, the amphipod Hyalella Montezuma, wait higher up in the water column at around 4 meters in depth. At sunset, the amphipods move to the surface to feed on algae and at the same time, the well leeches move up from the depths within to begin feeding on the amphipods. Researchers say this is the only place in the world where they see a migration pattern like this and it involves two endemic species that are not found “anywhere else in the world!” Surprisingly, the leeches contain the highest level of arsenic ever recorded in a living organism. It is one of the best-studied springs ecosystems in the world. The Well’s water is relatively constant in temperature, varying from 64 degrees to 77 degrees F, with relatively little-dissolved oxygen but a high concentration of dissolved carbon dioxide and relatively high concentration of arsenic. Despite its harsh chemistry, it provides a stable, highly productive environment for the life within it.
THE LEGENDARY DEPTHS OF MONTEZUMA WELL
The well is a detached unit of Montezuma Castle National Monument, is a natural limestone sinkhole near the town of Rimrock, Arizona through which some 1,500,000 US gallons of water emerge each day from an underground spring. The constant supply of warm, 74-degree water was the life-blood of the people who made their home here. Over 1.5 million gallons of water flows into the Well every day, a rate that has not fluctuated measurably despite recent droughts throughout the state of Arizona. This water enters a “swallet” near the end of the trail into the Well and flows through over 150 feet of limestone before re-emerging from the outlet into an irrigation ditch on the other side. Sections of this ditch date back over 1,000 years. The value of this water is recognized still today, as many residents of nearby Rimrock, AZ, rely on water flowing through the irrigation ditch for their gardens and livestock.
Probably the most fascinating part of the well is the fact it has a “False bottom!” The well may look somewhat shallow, as it’s only covering the bottom of the sinkhole, but it’s actually quite deep. There’s a false bottom at 55 feet, formed from suspended, fluidized sand. The actual solid bottom varies: at the west spring, it’s 124 feet down, while at the east it’s only 74 feet below the pond’s surface. The water is typically between 70-80° F, which makes for an ideal swimming temperature in this hot climate.
G.J. Murray became the first diver to report that the mysterious bottom was perhaps not the bottom in 1962. Murray reported of the eeriness of swimming “in a ‘bottomless pit’ with thousands of free swimming leeches” and labeled it a bottomless pit after observing that the bottom of the well appeared as “an irregular boiling surface, like that of thin mush cooking.” Numerous other divers have taken place since most of which also reported the very strange layer of what appears to be sandy sediments, describing the “false bottom” as “quicksand” or even “boiling oatmeal.”
In 2006, a team of divers from the National Park Service Submerged Resources Center was invited to the well to study the “false bottom” phenomenon who lowered a camera some 40-50 feet into the west vent area of the well and discovered it was a continual column of fluidized sand for the entire depth. (A significant point to make would be how the dive camera’s visibility could only be a foot or so ahead of it in a 40-50 foot high continual chamber of liquid sand leaving a whole lot of area to have something potentially hidden out of sight.)
Look around the rim, and you’ll see little stone houses and storerooms built into the overhang of the cliffs. It wasn’t just the cave that made this an ideal spot for a home. Why the people in the distant past left this great place is a mystery. There is some information available online and in books from the local tribes who knew of the well long ago and made note of such which is worthy of note.
GATEWAY TO THE UNDERWORLD
Taken from “A History of Montezuma Well.”
“They reminded me of a legend that had formerly been related to me of how the Snake arose from a great cavity or depression in the ground, and how, they had heard, water boiled out of that hole into a neighboring river. The Hopi have personal knowledge of the Well, for many of their number have visited Verde Valley, and they claim the ruins there as the home of their ancestors. It would not be strange, therefore, if this marvelous crater was regarded by them as a house of Paluluken, their mythic Plumed Serpent.”
In a video we have made of Chris Putnam speaking he mentions and possibly identifying Quetzalcoatl the “Green Plumbed Serpent” as a fallen Seraphim Angel mentioned in the Holy Bible who is rumored to have a house inside the “Montezuma Well” by local tribal priests and elders.
In the book “Sedona: City of the Star People” author Mark Amaru Pinkham reveals an esoteric history of Sedona, Arizona, which he says was known in very ancient times as Palatkwapi, the “Red House.” According to Hopi legend, Extraterrestrial Star People built Palatkwapi as a glorious city of sacred wisdom. It was here that the migrating Hopis learned their sacred rites and dances, as well as many mysteries of the universe. Nevertheless; of particular interest in an interview done about the book the author mentions in detail how Montezuma Well is according to the Yavapai tribe a “Doorway to the Underworld.”
Vincent Randall, the former Chairman of the Yavapai-Apache Nation, gives a first-hand account of the existence of gateways specifically talking about the Montezuma Well as being a “doorway to the underworld.” The evidence is getting deep indeed thus far about this “LEGEND OF THE VERDE VALLEY.”
In another account we discovered from the former Chairman of the Hopi Nation Ferrel Secakuku, member of the snake clan, specifically talking about the Montezuma Well as being home to the serpent who lives in the waters which depths are said in the video to be endless almost like a portal would be. (Can’t help but notice the connection to the green plumbed serpent and the snake clan.)
Just a few miles away you have spirals on the wall of V Bar V Ranch alongside a “Giant” looking figure who some have said is the “Green Plumbed Serpent” spoken to have a house inside the Montezuma Well.
The MONTEZUMA WELL is indeed the hidden “Gate” or “Portal” of the Verde Valley the depths of which have yet to be fully understood or explored because so far they have only been accessible to by the gods. Legend says the god Quetzalcoatl, also known as the Green Plumbed Serpent whose mouth is viewed as a wormhole, a place for arrival and departure of spirit beings, is portrayed as having a ladder descend from the sky by the Mayas.
ZUNI TRADITION: PORTALS EXIST TO THE ABOVE AND BELOW
According to the Zuni who also like the Hopi speak of the Kachina’s as “keepers of the upper world” who are able to open special portals from above and below specifically mentioning the entrance of the 4th world the “underworld.”
HOPI TRADITION: DOORWAYS TO THE UNDERWORLD EXIST
Hopi Indians claim that their ancestors emerged from the underworld an enchanted opening from the mysterious recesses of the earth. Author and anthropologist, Robert Sepehr, explores these questions and attempts to unlock their riddles, which have eluded any serious consideration in mainstream academia in a book called Gods with Amnesia: Subterranean Worlds of Inner Earth. A video we got a segment from gives credit to the claims heard about the Montezuma Well being a doorway to the underworld as well as brings to light the underground city built in the Grand Canyon.
The Smithsonian Institute may have discovered artifacts inside a massive cavern with intricate passages and rooms, including tablets bearing hieroglyphics. An article published in The Arizona Gazette on April 5, 1909, that the Grand Canyon was once home to a lost civilization, consisting of people of “gigantic proportions.” Even the History Channel television program Ancient Aliens mentioned the City of giants.
“Into the depths of the Montezuma Well Videos” The very mysterious Montezuma Well a place unlike anywhere else in the world for various reasons has what some are calling a floating false bottom.
Various sources have verified the legend of the god Quetzalcoatl, also known as the Green Plumbed Serpent, resides in the depths of the Montezuma Well. Connected to this god is how the serpent’s mouth is viewed as a wormhole, a place for arrival and departure of spirit beings. Isn’t it a little odd and strange there is a false bottom to the well the depths of which have yet to be explored and we have this extraordinary legend of a being who can descend from the heavens straight on into the depths of the underworld. Even more perplexing is how the local tribal elders of the distant past knew about the mysterious depths of the Montezuma Well long before the dives were done discovering the hidden or false bottom. Now that is spooky! Talk about a “LEGEND OF THE VERDE VALLEY!”
THE BIBLE MENTIONS GATEWAYS
What does the bible tell us about this question of there being doorways?
Saint Paul teaches us in Ephesians 4:9 that Christ our Lord descended into Hell after He offered His life on the cross. “Now that He ascended, what is it, but because He also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?” Note here that Hell is described as having “parts” that are the four parts of Hell.
Psalm 23:7: “Lift up your gates, O ye princes,” which the medieval Gloss interprets: “that is–Ye princes of hell, take away your power, whereby hitherto you held men fast in hell”. In Ecclesiasticus 24:45, Siracides (author of Sirach) prophecies: “I will penetrate to all the lower parts of the earth.”
The Greeks themselves built mystical gateways into the bottom of Mt. Hermon which was dedicated to the horned god Pan. The same spot happens to be where Jesus says “and on this rock, I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”
As he rested his head upon a covenant stone, a portal opened. Jacob saw a vision of a ladder with angels ascending and descending on it. When he awoke from sleep, he said, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it... How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of Heaven!” Genesis 28:16-17
Throughout Scripture, we see the existence of doorways or portals:
“Lift up your heads, O you gates! And be lifted up, you everlasting doors! And the King of glory shall come in”--Psalm 24:7. “He commanded the clouds above and opened the doors of heaven”--Psalm 78:23.
“Blessed is the man who listens to me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors”--Proverbs 8:34.
“Most assuredly, I say to you, hereafter you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man”--John 1:51.
“After these things I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven. And the first voice which I heard was like a trumpet speaking with me, saying “Come up here, and I will show you things which must take place after this. Immediately, I was in the spirit”--Revelation 4:1-2a.
The “door” in Revelation suggests God’s invitation for us to have access to His heavenly realm. As His friends, the Lord wants to open the portals of Heaven and release an unparalleled visitation of heavenly hosts. Jacob Discovered a Heavenly Portal Jacob spent the night in a place where his forefather Abraham had “called upon the name of the Lord”--Genesis 12:8.
Eager to mark the specific location where he had encountered the stairway to heaven, Jacob erected a monument and named the place, “Bethel” or “dwelling place of God.” Several times after this, the Lord told Jacob to return to Bethel, where He would speak to him. Have you ever wondered why the Lord, who could speak to you anywhere, would instruct you to go somewhere else so that He could talk with you? While God was talking to Elijah, He instructed the prophet to go to Mount Horeb, also known as Mount Sinai, where the Lord would talk to him further--1 Kings 19:11-18.
Divine portals into the heavenly realm exist around the Earth today. The city of Jerusalem is a portal. In fact, it is the major portal on the face of the Earth. That’s why both David and Isaiah said that Jerusalem is the center of the earth. Why do you suppose the enemy is trying to capture Jerusalem? He is trying to block or close off this portal.
Of all the mysterious places in the Verde Valley, the Montezuma Well has to be the most fascinating since it is a physical reality with depths unlike anywhere else in the world. The fact the Native American Indians knew and spoke of the place as being the home of a god featured in another segment in this series called “Legend of the Plumber Serpent” long before any dives or other tests were done to determine the false bottom is astonishing! It gives some credit to the people who lived in ancient times who showed their knowledge was correct and insightful before science could even dream to prove it.
Lastly, other religions in the Middle East believe powerful beings are bound in the earth specifically within “Wells” where they await an appointed time to be released. The fact there are beliefs in Islam through prophecies which state there are subterranean personalities that will emerge from a “Well” who one of their leading personalities went down into centuries ago and is scheduled to come back up through the same well to lead an Islamic revolution to victory at a particular time in the future gives some credit the legends found here in the Verde Valley at Montezuma Well. The idea that such a being could live in and come up out of the well is biblical in scope since the bible itself speaks of these gateways existing on earth.
Indeed, the Montezuma Well is the Verde Valley’s most “legendary vortex the depths of which have yet to be explored by any man.” Finally, in Islam, there is located behind the Jamkaran mosque a well. According to many Shiite Muslims, legend says out of this well will emerge one day their version of an Islamic ‘savior.’ They call him the Mahdi and say he is a personage that is expected to come on the scene, by Islam, as a Messiah figure. Legends say he will emerge from the well in the end of time, according to their writings, very much like how we think of the return of Jesus. Shiite Muslims believe the Mahdi is a descendant of the Prophet Mohammed who vanished in the middle of the 9th century. One can only ponder the implications here. If this supernatural being is going to come out of the well then it stands to good reason that’s where he went and currently is.
